A smoke alarm that is not working is useless and provides a false sense of security.
Once a week, test the alarm by pushing the test button with a broom handle to ensure it beeps.
Dust the alarm with a vacuum cleaner brush.
If you have a hard-wired smoke alarm, these still have a battery as a back-up and the battery needs to be changed as well.
Be sure you pay attention to the type of battery when replacing.
